A Sober Companion is certified and professionally trained to work with clients, helping them maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The goal is to give maximum recovery support to our clients in the first fragile days or weeks and get them through the struggles of early recovery. A sober companion will stay at the client’s home for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, or however much time is necessary to provide full recovery support.

Some clients we work with are fresh out of rehab. We help them transition back into their homes and create a healthy, sober living space for them. Also, we plan a healthy workout routine, diet, and education on proper nutrition and provide relapse prevention tools. You can also opt for our Sober Transport service, as we will travel with the client, if necessary, as his or her Sober Escort. Sometimes, our clients will have a court case or business event to attend. In addition, we provide recovery coaching , interventions, rehab placement, and other recovery support to help them stay sober to accomplish their mission without incident.

If you’re looking for that extra recovery support and don’t want to risk relapse when heading into the danger zones, give us a call and let’s put together a game plan to keep you safe and sober as you accomplish your goals.

How the Sober Companion Process Works: From Day One to Long-Term Freedom

A sober companion doesn’t simply “watch” someone—they become a living bridge between treatment (or early recovery) and real-world living. The process is highly structured yet completely personalized.

  1. Seamless Transition from Treatment Most clients begin working with a sober companion immediately upon discharge from detox, residential rehab, or intensive outpatient programs. The companion meets the client at the facility, handles safe transport home or to a sober living environment, and stays present for the first critical hours and days when relapse risk is highest.
  2. Customized Daily Structure Together, you build a sustainable daily schedule that includes recovery meetings (12-step, SMART, Refuge, etc.), therapy appointments, exercise, nutrition, work or school responsibilities, and healthy leisure activities. The companion ensures the schedule is followed while gradually teaching the client to self-manage.
  3. Real-Time Relapse Prevention Companions are trained to recognize subtle early warning signs—shifts in mood, isolation, irregular sleep, or “stinking thinking”—and intervene immediately with grounding techniques, redirection, or emergency support calls. This 24/7 availability means cravings never have to be faced alone.
  4. Rebuilding Life Skills Many people leave treatment able to stay sober in a controlled environment but unsure how to handle grocery shopping, dating, family events, work stress, or travel. The companion models and coaches healthy decision-making in real situations, turning knowledge into lived experience.
  5. Family Recovery Support Weekly or bi-weekly check-ins with loved ones (with client consent) help repair trust, teach new communication patterns, and prevent old enabling behaviors from resurfacing.
  6. Gradual Step-Down Phase As stability grows, companion support tapers from 24/7 live-in → overnight → daily check-ins → several times per week → on-call availability. This prevents both dependency on the companion and premature removal of support.

Unique Benefits of Working with a Professional Sober Companion

  • Near-zero early relapse rate: Clients with a companion for the first 90 days post-treatment have relapse rates routinely below 10–15%, compared to national averages of 40–60% within the first month.
  • Faster reintegration into career and relationships: Companions often accompany clients to work meetings, social functions, or family gatherings, providing discreet real-time coaching and accountability.
  • Travel and high-risk situations made safe: Business trips, destination weddings, holidays, and performance tours become opportunities for growth rather than triggers when a companion travels alongside.
  • Personalized recovery pathway: Whether the client prefers traditional 12-step, evidence-based cognitive approaches, holistic wellness, or faith-based recovery, the companion aligns with and reinforces that specific philosophy.
  • Emotional regulation and trauma processing: Many companions are also trained in somatic experiencing, mindfulness, or EMDR basics, offering immediate tools when intense feelings surface outside therapy hours.
  • Long-term cost savings: Preventing even one relapse saves tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in repeated treatment, legal fees, lost income, or medical complications.

A sober companion is far more than temporary help—they are a trusted partner during the most vulnerable and transformative chapters of your life. By combining professional expertise with genuine human connection, they help turn the fragile hope of “Day One” into the confident freedom of “Year One” and beyond.
